Teachers, too, see a definite educational benefit. Visits and workshops allow them to illustrate and enrich topics covered in class. There are also teaching guides and training courses to help teachers organise their work when taking part in a cultural initiative (for example, ‘How do I prepare my class for a concert or orchestra visit?’). These projects also provide teachers with a wealth of knowledge, which they can use and reproduce in the classroom and in other contexts. The latter find that their pupils often take the learning acquired during cultural activities on board in a lasting way and are left with very positive memories. “One class wrote a letter to a guest speaker thanking her for talking to them about their concerns about social media and their online image,” says Gasparet. “Perhaps the best reaction I’ve ever witnessed was from a child who, after a performance, said: ‘When I arrived this morning, I was sad. Now, I’m happy.’” MAKERSPACE: TAMING TECHNOLOGY A digital space run and funded by the City of Luxembourg, the Makerspace gives teachers and pupils in primary schools a chance to learn about the latest technologies. State-ofthe-art equipment is available: 3D printers and scanners, laser cutters, educational robots, programming kits for learning coding and robotics, cameras, an editing bench and green screen, virtual reality headsets and software... The Makerspace’s raison d’être is to encourage the learning of these technologies, introduce certain basic concepts and develop a critical and innovative mindset. To achieve this, a digital skills teacher from the ministry of Education, Children and Youth supervises the educational activities on site, offering support to the teachers accompanying their classes during the activities. A collaborative space where group work is favoured, the Makerspace has given rise to a variety of projects: cycle 4 pupils programming robots using the Lego League kit, or creating video games using the Bloxels platform. IT’S NOT JUST ABOUT CULTURE
